English Learners in the College Readiness, Pre-AP & AP English Classroom

Recommended For:
College Readiness English Teachers
Pre-AP® English Teachers
AP® English Language and Literature Teachers
(Grades 6-12)

Time:
6 hours (1 Day Workshop)

Overview:
English language learners (ELL) have an extra barrier in the AP® English classroom. But this doesn’t mean they cannot be successful and don’t deserve the attention or tools to help them thrive. This one-day, interactive workshop will provide research-based strategies, structures, resources, and skill development to support English language learners in college readiness, Pre-AP® and AP® classes. Visual texts, choral reading, revision and style exercises help English language learners to effectively access challenging texts and write analytically about them. Time will be allotted for appropriate text selection, along with identifying the challenges the AP® Literature and AP® language examinations present to English learners.

Learning Objectives:
● Acquire effective methods in engaging and supporting ELL students in the AP® environment,
● Develop a specialty in supporting ELL students in the AP® classroom, and
● Create lessons and incorporate interactive activities to improve cognition of concepts and application of knowledge.

Testimonials:
“This workshop helped me to understand that using visual texts can help students with identifying tone. Pairing longer fiction text with nonfiction passages will allow students to help build context, and ultimately help to earn the point necessary for sophistication of writing.”
